Physicians don’t have the time to create a compliance plan. They don’t have time to gather information required to create effective compliance plan to integrate in their practice. Yet, this information can save both time and money. Therefore, it falls upon the administration, typically the health information manager or director in a hospital or the practice manager in a physician practice, to establish an organizational culture of legal and ethical responsibilities to honor each patient as well as each staff member. All healthcare providers, both hospitals and physician offices, must establish policies, procedures, internal workflows, and processes which promote and integrate actions and attitudes that are aligned with federal and state laws. With regulations constantly evolving, the OIG’s workplan regularly being updated, and most compliance budgets never changing from year-to-year, deciding where to begin is a challenge in its own right. But in order to create and maintain a successful, long-term compliance plan, these are only some of the hurdles we need to get over.
